How to experience the Amsterdam Light Festival at its best

Amsterdam Light Festival

Every winter, Amsterdam transforms into a sparkling open-air gallery filled with light and art. From November 27, 2025, to January 18, 2026, the 14th edition of the Amsterdam Light Festival will brighten the city once again, this time under the theme “World of Legacy.”
This year’s guiding question: How do you want to be remembered?

Follow a 6.5-kilometer route along more than 20 breathtaking light artworks created by international artists including Javier Riera, Gabriel Lester, Karolina Howorko, and Utskottet. Each piece, from monumental installations to subtle designs, tells a story that connects beautifully to the theme. As night falls, the city transforms, and you can take in the art at your own rhythm, surrounded by the magic of illuminated Amsterdam.

The best ways to discover the festival

There are many ways to experience the Amsterdam Light Festival, each offering its own unique perspective.

On foot

Walking the route lets you get up close to the installations. You can pause, admire the details, and soak up the festive atmosphere. It’s flexible and immersive, but keep in mind that evenings can be busy, and chilly weather might make it a bit less comfortable.

By bike

Cycling is a classic Amsterdam experience and perfect for covering more ground quickly. However, the narrow canal paths, crowds, and darkness can make it less relaxing. You might find yourself focusing more on steering than on the art itself.

By boat

For the most complete and comfortable experience, step aboard and explore the festival from the water. Many artworks are designed with the canals in mind, and from a boat, you not only see the light installations but also their shimmering reflections dancing on the surface of the water. It’s a view you simply won’t get on land.

A canal cruise offers the ideal mix of comfort and wonder:

  • Relax on a heated, covered boat with panoramic windows or a lounge-style rear deck

  • Restrooms are available on board

  • Enjoy the official audio guide (in Dutch and English) that tells the stories behind each artwork

  • Photography lovers will appreciate the stable setting and the magical reflections you can capture without the crowds
